During my internship at the Max-Planck-Institute for Plasma Physics I helped developing the Psydac Finite-Element Python library. Psydac uses high-order splines and parallelization. The user provides a geometry either analytically or as a file as well as weak equations defining the model. After choosing a Finite-Element discretization the library automatically generates the python code solving the system equations. Until now my task was to create an interface for linear operators similar to scipy, but more generic, i.e. not just for numpy.ndarrays.

My workload differs: usually, it's 16-20 hours per week. Most of the data came from various web resources such as a website or paid online advertising channels. My tasks were mainly extracting, organizing, and analyzing patterns, interpreting data, and building hypotheses based on it. In the era of datasets of ever increasing size, the life sciences are no exception. In my internship, I focused on the visualization of such datasets. Working at the intersection of biologists and downstream users like machine learning practitioners, I developed/implemented algorithms for the visualization and i/o of large-scale biological datasets such as those from microscopy or RNA-seq - examples include multiscale/multichannel 2D image rendering, volume ray casting for 3D data, efficient sparse matrix loading, custom GPU loading/rendering algorithm for heatmaps, and more. The target platform was the browser to which end I mostly used WebGL, an API for graphics rendering on the GPU in the web browser. I also integrated/assisted in the integration of the visualization tools into large-scale data portals, writing a python API and talking with analysts/producers of the data to properly visualize their results/experiment.

It is an extremely turbulent year for the foreign exchange market (e.g. EUR/USD) and I had the fortune to spend my summer at a S&T desk to learn about this market dynamics. In this fast-paced and challenging environment, I was inspired by my senior colleagues' making market-moving trading bets and their charmant appearance in front of the clients, just as in a Wallstreet movie. I assist the team in building and pitching option strategies and drafting weekly update newsletters for our clients. Moreover, I developed tools to analyze our trading performance and improve our bid/ask quotes. I gained a deep understanding of the FX market and learned a lot about the mathematics behind it, from calculating forward/swap prices to the famous Black-Scholes Model.

So durfte ich bei einer Kooperation zwischen der Abfallwirtschaft München und Infineon mitwirken, bei der versucht wird, die Routen der Müllfahrzeuge zu optimieren.

Their main clients come from banking, insurance and energy sectors. My team will primarily work online, since we are scattered all over Germany. The project is a custom-made Machine Learning solution for a client from the energy sector. The team is very diverse in terms of academic background, notably our boss has a PhD in Astrophysics. Polygenic risk scores werden verwendet, um die genetische Wahrscheinlichkeit einer Person zu schätzen, einen Phenotype oder eine Krankheit zu haben. Sie sind berechnet nach dem Genotypprofil der Person und relevante GWAS (Genome wide association studies) Daten. Dabei habe ich Einblicke in die Arbeit eines Forschungszentrums bekommen und praktische Erfahrung mit Statisik und die Benutzung von Software wie PLINK und PRSice.

I applied ML methods to associate Bulk RNA-Seq data with various clinical outcomes of experiments with mice. Outcomes like histopathological, microbiota and clinical. That is for a given variable determine the important genes. The issue is that the dataset is small. So I used variable selection methods for regression models. For instance Bootstrap Lasso (Bolasso). The idea is to determine the most frequent genes which were selected (i.e. with non-zero estimated coefficients) by many trained models. For the main work I used R and a bit of Python for creating the final report.

Der Bereich EDT bei HSBC ist zuständig für den Handel von Derivaten. Dazu gehört vor allem die Bepreisung von Put- und Calloptionen, und das Hedgen des Portfolios. Um diese Optionen u.a. nach dem Black-Scholes Modell zu bepreisen benötigt man eine sehr zuverlässige Schätzung der Volatilität der jeweiligen Titel. Da der Markt für Optionen kompetitiv ist, muss man als Market Maker sehr enge Bid- und Askpreise anbieten und Fehlbepreisung kann daher hohe Kosten mit sich tragen. In diesem Praktikum habe ich das Team mitunter damit unterstützt, Interpolationsmodelle für Volaitilitäten zu entwickeln. Wir haben Volatilitäten für Optionen geschätzt, wenn ähnliche Optionen bereits gehandelt wurden, und sich die neue Option nur in ihrer Laufzeit oder in ihrem Ausübungspreis unterschieden haben.

Seit dem 01.09.2022 absolviere ich für das kommende halbe Jahr ein Praktikum bei der BMW Group in München im Bereich Technologiesteuerung Karosseriebauplanung. Die Abteilung, in der ich tätig bin, ist in den Bereichen Technologie Umformen (Presswerk), Technologie Karosseriebau und Technologie Oberfläche (Lackiererei) aktiv. Das heißt, um eine fertige Karosserie zu erhalten, werden zunächst einmal im Presswerk die einzelnen Teile gepresst, danach im Karosseriebau zusammengefügt und letztendlich die Karosserie lackiert. Die Technologiesteuerung Karosseriebauplanung unterstützt in den drei Bereichen z.B. Prozesse hinsichtlich des optimalen Einsatzes der Werkmitarbeiter oder der optimalen Anzahl an Werkmitarbeitern in bestimmten Funktionsbereichen. Hierbei durfte ich bis jetzt das Team in meiner Abteilung mit der Aktualisierung von Datenbanken, der Erweiterung von Datenbanken um bestimmte Tools und dem Herausfiltern von Daten, um mithilfe dieser Empfehlungen hinsichtlich der optimalen Anzahl an Werkmitarbeitern in bestimmten Funktionsbereichen auszusprechen, unterstützen.

Im Rahmen meines verpflichtenden Betriebspraktikums, habe ich bei der msg life ag, einem Softwareentwickler für Lebensversicherungsunternehmen, ein 3 monatiges Praktikum absolviert. Im Rahmen meines Praktikums musste ich in den Java Rechenkern der Life Factory, der Software der msg life, analysieren und durch debugging herausfinden, wie einzelne, wirtschaftsmathematische Größen berechnet werden. Diese Erkenntnisse sollten dann in einem Excel Rechner festgehalten werden, sodass zukünftige neue Mitarbeiter dadurch und mithilfe des Rechners geschult und in die Software eingeführt werden können. Außerdem habe ich meine Erkenntnisse in einer Powerpoint dokumentiert, ins firmeninterne Intranet hochgeladen, sodass die Berechnungsmethoden für Schulungen in der Firma verwendet werden können. Mein konkretes Thema war: Die Analyse eines klassischen Rententarifs mithilfe der Berechnungsmethode nach Markov.

Within the scope of my internship program at company called Fimetech, I had a chance to not only strengthen my technical skills but also soft skills by working with a team of high-experienced professionals. My work lasting period of approximately 4 months was mainly dedicated researching and developing distributed data processing system. Challenge was to find trade-off between resources and latency in order to process huge amount of data coming from thousands of devices/robots. To make it short, the mentioned robot is working mainly with children and idea is to develop the emotional/social/cognitive state of children. In other words, the robot is trying to be daily basis friend and share the time with children. Thus, it allows the possibility of collecting the variety types of data from children such as face, audio, speech and etc features. Therefore, it is vital to have rigid data pipeline in order to take the care of over-mentioned information.

Fimetech is an outsource company with the specification of Machine Learning. Thus, during my internship period I mainly worked on two projects: book recognizer and big data collection/analysis. The tasks get more challenging because they should be performed real-time on the robot with embedded processing units. My first task was to recognize the limited number of books with the option of further expanding them easily (without retraining or collecting data). To solve this task I used the SIFT algorithm and constructed the workflow in a way one can easily enlarge known list of books by just one photo. The second task was to collect data from multiple robots and process them collecting some insights from daily-updating data. I used large-scale data processing models Apache Beam and Spark by constructing pipelines in both batch and streaming mode. In the end the collected data was shown in the interactive dashboards.

Meine Aufgabe war es, bei der Entwicklung eines adaptiven Systems zu unterstützen, welches automatisiert Prozessdaten bei der Motormontage auswertet und Fehler erkennt. Der Fokus lag dabei auf der Automatisierung des Trainings von Machine Learning Modellen sowie deren Management im produktiven Betrieb. Außerdem war es wichtig, Modelle mit schlechter Performance durch Feedbacks und Visualisierungen zu erkennen und automatisch zu verbessern. Für die Implementierung des Systems wurde hauptsächlich Python, Plotly und SQL verwendet.

BVK is the largest German pension company, which manages twelve pension schemes. For example Bayerische Ärzteversorgung, Bayerische Apothekerversorgung and Bayerische Architectenversorgung. I am working as a working student for the actuarial risk management group in mathematic department. My project during this period is biometric research. By analyzing the death probability for different pension schemes and different time periods, we can know more about the risks the pension companies are facing. I applied typical mortality models such as Gompertz, Makeham-perks to analysis the real pension data and compared with the adjusted Heubeck table. For the mathematical modeling and optimization problems I mainly use R and VB.NET. My comparison plots also give an intuition whether the Heubeck Trend can describe the tendency of death probability well for different groups of people. My group is cooperating with investment department, knowing the mortality risk and longevity risk we are facing helps to properly make investment decisions.

The project delt with creating a software so as to automate the process of categorizing emails with respect to their text in order for the software to recognise which department of the client company is responsible for solving the corresponding problem described in the email. Some of my tasks constituted of performing various statistical analysis on the clusters of the model to evaluate its performance and trying to create a forecasting tool for the entry dates of the emails to further improve the accuracy of the clusters. I was also dealing with several use-cases regarding the improvement of the classification of data for the model, as for example creating an ML model using gradient boosting to classify the data into bigger subcategories of the final categories. Furthermore during this time I was introduced to many different softwares for deployment of ML models and I learned lots of methods and algorithms regarding clustering by consolidating the relevant literature.

Ich absolvierte ein fünfmonatiges Praktikum in der Abteilung "Vorentwicklung Thermodynamik/Aufladung von R-Ottomotoren" bei der AUDI AG. Die Abteilung ist zuständig für die Entwicklung der ottomotorischen Brenverfahren, sowie für die simulative Bewertung moderner Motorkonzepte hinsichtlich ihres CO2-Potentials für verschiedene Einsatzszenarien. Das Hauptprojekt, dass ich während meines Arbeitszeitraums unterstützte, richtete sich der Entwicklung der nächsten Generation des 2,0 Liter TFSI Reihen-Vierzylinder Ottomotors. Dabei stand im verstärkten Fokus die Reduzierung des Verbrauchs und dementsprechend der Emissionen. Zu meinen Aufgaben gehörte die Planung und Vorbereitung von Versuchsreihen am Motorenprüfstand, sowie die anschließende Analyse der erzielten Messdaten mittels der Datenverarbeitungssoftware AVL Concerto und die Auswertunfg der Ergebnisse.

Ich habe drei Monate ein Praktikum bei der Komm.ONE Freiburg in verschiedenen Abteilungen absolviert. Die Komm.ONE, eine IT-Dienstleisterin, ist eine Anstalt des öffentlichen Rechts mit 7 Standorten in Baden-Württemberg, sie unterstützt die Kommunen und das Land Baden-Württemberg bei einer technologiebasierten Zukunft. Die meiste Zeit war ich in der Abteilung "business intelligence", in der ich Qlik kennen lernen durfte und mit R Vorhersagen erarbeitet habe. Außerdem war ich in den Abteilungen Service Desk, Anwendungsbetreuung und Anwendungsentwicklung. In diesen habe ich erste Einblicke in KI im Bereich Chatbot bekommen, von welchen ich eventuell auch kurz berichten möchte.

Während meiner zweimonatigen Tätigkeit bei Infosys Consulting durfte ich erste Erfahrungen in der Unternehmensberatung sammeln. Die Infosys Consulting ist als Tochterunternehmen des indischen IT Konzerns Infosys Ltd. ein aufstrebender Beratungsdienstleister der die Schnittstelle zwichen IT- und betriebswirtschaflicher Beratung zunehmend beherrscht. Als Teil des Insurance Teams lernte ich verschiedene Aufgabenbereiche der Tätigkeit kennen und erlangte wichtige Fähigkeiten in dieser für Mathematiker sehr naheliegenden Branche. Meine erbrachte Leistung lässt sich in drei Teile aufgliedern: Unterstützung bei Anfertigung von mehreren Proposals (2 externe für potentielle Projekte und 1 interner für potentielle Übernahmen), Mitarbeit an der firmeninternen Portfolioentwicklung betreffend Anwendung von künstlicher Intelligenz und Unterstützung bei konkreter Projektarbeit für den Kunden.

Blickfeld’s volumetric monitoring solution can continuously monitor volumes in real time, enabling one to digitally manage their inventory across multiple locations. Algorithmic improvements are expected for the next qube release and I will be working closely with the Research and Development team.

I was a working student at the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied and Integrated Security (Fraunhofer AISEC) for two years. The Fraunhofer AISEC focuses its research on the security and custom integration of IT systems especially in the context of embedded systems, network security and cloud computing. I helped my supervisor with work on his PhD thesis and industry projects. In the latter case my focus was on formal methods in computer science, i.e., mathematical rigorous techniques to verify properties about software systems. I was responsible for evaluating the applicability of different methods to the specification and implementation of a custom communication protocol. The mathematical concepts I encountered during my work include the expressive power of different logic systems and process calculi and linear temporal logic (LTL).

Das Deutsche Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt ist die Forschungseinrichtung der Bundesrepublik Deutschland für Luft- und Raumfahrt, Digitalisierung, Energie, Sicherheit und Verkehr. Es besteht unter anderem aus rund 50 Instituten, die sich mit diesen Bereichen beschäftigen. Während meines viereinhalb monatigen Praktikums war ich am Institut für Optische Sensorsysteme in der Abteilung Echtzeit-Datenprozessierung tätig. Dieses Institut entwickelt eigene Optische Sensorsysteme -- also Geräte, mit denen Sichtbares gemessen und aufgenommen werden kann. Das Ziel der Abteilung Echtzeit-Datenprozessierung ist es, Methoden zu finden, um die Daten der unterschiedlichen Sensorsysteme in Echtzeit zu verarbeiten. Meine Hauptaufgabe bestand darin, Computer Vision Modelle zu entwickeln, die auf solche Daten optimiert sind. In diesem Rahmen habe ich hauptsächlich an der Entwicklung und Implementierung eines Objektdetektors zur Erkennung von mehreren Objektklassen auf unterschiedlichen Sensordaten gearbeitet.

I was a working student in the Chief Customer Office division of Allianz Kunde und Markt. My main task was the analysis of customer data to derive strategic fields of action to increase customer satisfaction. I was analysing patterns in the customer feedback data received through various channels, forecasted NPS value based on derived features, and built hypotheses based on it. In the scope of the Voice of the Customer project, I was responsible for the implementation of new functionalities and maintenance of a dashboard created in R Shiny. The dashboard provides an overview and various statistics of customer feedback. I was also responsible for database maintenance and implementation of new architectures. Through this experience, I’ve improved my programming skills in both R and SQL.
