Independent Studies: Talks

28 February 2019
Bildmotiv TopMath
The Independent Studies form the core of the elite study program TopMath. The students present the results of their studies in a talk, which is open to a general university audience.

In intensive independent study in their first, second and, if desired, third TopMath year, the students work on a mathematical problem corresponding to their thematic interests, accompanied and guided by their mentor. The result is presented at the end of the TopMath year, amongst others in a talk open to a general audience of university members.

Independent Studies in the summer term 2019

This term we will hear talks by Johannes Bäumler, David Hien, Yifan Jia, Eva-Maria Rott and Jannik Steinmeier, who are students of the TopMath 14th year class taking their second Independent Studies exam, and all students of the TopMath 15th year class: Thiago Carvalho Corso, Maria Elena Gonzalez Herrero, Chokri Manai, Fabian Roll und Jamico Schade. The latter take the mandatory Independent Studies exam of the second semester, which decides on their admission to the doctoral program of TopMath.

The ten students work in different areas of mathematics: Johannes Bäumler, mentee of Prof. Noam Berger Steiger, is a member of the Chair for Probability. David Hien is mentee of  Prof. Oliver Junge and part of the Scientific Computing working group. Yifan Jia conducts research in the field of Mathematical Physics, her mentor is Prof. Michael M. Wolf. Eva-Maria Rott is part of the Dynamics working group and mentee of Prof. Daniel Matthes. Jannik Steinmeier's area of research is  Discrete Differential Geometry, his mentor Prof. Tim Hoffmann.

The interests of Thiago Corso, mentee of Prof. Gero Friesecke, lie in the area of Mathematical Physics and Analysis. Maria Elena Gonzalez Herrero, supervised by Prof. Christian Kühn und Prof. Christina Kuttler, works at the interface of Dynamics and Mathematical Modeling. Like Yifan and Thiago also Chokri Manai, mentee of Prof. Simone Warzel, conducts research in the field of Mathematical Physics. Fabian Roll deals with Geometry and Topology, his mentor is Prof. Ulrich Bauer. Jamico Schade's mentor is Prof. Stefan Weltge; he works in the field of Discrete Mathematics.

The talks, which take place from the end of July to October, 2nd (main examination day), are based on their areas of research.
