Summerschool in Mathematical Physics 2020

The Summer School of the International Association of Mathematical Physics (IAMP) and the European Mathematical Society (EMP) is postponed from 2020 to 13 to 17 September 2021, due to uncertainties related to the current coronavirus situation. It will take place at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), Garching campus.

Registration, including an opportunity to apply for limited travel support, will reopen towards the end 2020 with a deadline of 31 May 2021. If you already applied to QIMP20 and are interested in participating in 2021, we ask that you please resubmit your application.

About IAMP - EMS Summer School in Mathematical Physics 2021

The IAMP - EMS Summer School in Mathematical Physics 2021 is aimed at doctoral and master students as well as postdocs with a background in quantum information/mathematical physics, but anyone interested is welcome to participate. We expect to able to support the travel of a limited number of junior participants upon application.

This program is the latest in an international series of summer schools entitled "IAMP-EMS Summer School in Mathematical Physics", and focuses on quantum information in many-body physics. In addition to the four main lecture courses, there will be a poster session for junior participants to present their research.

IAMP-EMS Summer School: scientific program

When many quantum particles interact, they can organize themselves into highly entangled states with unexpected properties that transcend those of the individual constituents. The description of those states and their properties is typically rather challenging - not only from a mathematical point of view. In the last 15 years, concepts and tools from quantum information theory (QIT) have proven highly useful in investigating such systems. This new perspective aims to characterize and classify the complexity in large quantum systems.

Conversely, many-body quantum systems provide the natural testing grounds for further ideas in QIT. Specific examples for the interplay of concepts and methods between QIT and many-body quantum systems include:

  • Entanglement entropies as quantities measuring how far many-body quantum states deviate from product states.
  • Tensor network representations of eigenstates of quantum spin systems as a tool to describe and establish in particular their low-energy properties.
  • Classification of topologically ordered quantum phases and their link to quantum error correction codes.

The main lecturers of the school are Fernando Brandao (CalTech/ Amazon Web Services), David Perez Garcia (Universidad Complutense de Madrid/ ICMAT), Bruno Nachtergaele (University of California, Davis), and Reinhard Werner (Leibniz University Hannover).
