Methodology and weighting

The British recruiting company QS conducts surveys in science and business on the quality of universities for its ranking. It also determines how often scientific studies are cited, which shows their importance in research. Four indicators are weighted differently according to subject culture:

  • the academic reputation of the university
  • the employer reputation
  • the frequency of their cited studies
  • the H index of citations. This index measures the productivity and influence of a scientist, group or university based on citations of publications.

No German university made it into the top 50 of the "QS World University Rankings by Subject" in Mathematics 2020. In the Top 100 are beside the TUM

  1. Technical University of Berlin (TU Berlin),
  2. Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms University of Bonn,
