TUM Mathematics lead nationwide
QS World University Ranking 2020

In the prestigious "QS World University Ranking by Subject" 2020, the Technical University of Munich (TUM) is ranked first among German universities in the subject of mathematics. In the overall field of natural sciences, the TUM is ranked 28th.
Methodology and weighting
The British recruiting company QS conducts surveys in science and business on the quality of universities for its ranking. It also determines how often scientific studies are cited, which shows their importance in research. Four indicators are weighted differently according to subject culture:
- the academic reputation of the university
- the employer reputation
- the frequency of their cited studies
- the H index of citations. This index measures the productivity and influence of a scientist, group or university based on citations of publications.
No German university made it into the top 50 of the "QS World University Rankings by Subject" in Mathematics 2020. In the Top 100 are beside the TUM
- Technical University of Berlin (TU Berlin),
- Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms University of Bonn,
- Humboldt University of Berlin,
- RWTH Aachen University and
- Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich.
TUM 11 times in the TOP 50
TUM ranks among the top 50 universities worldwide in subjects. The edition of the "QS World University Ranking", which evaluates the universities as a whole and includes other indicators, has already been published in mid-2019. TUM is ranked 55th in this ranking, making it the best German university for the fifth time in a row.
