"Preis für gute Lehre" awarded to Nada Sissouno

Award for teaching at the state universities of Bavaria

Nada Sissouno

Dr. Nada Sissouno has received the "Preis für gute Lehre" (Prize for good teaching) at the state universities of Bavaria. The Bavarian Minister for Science, Bernd Siebler, awarded the mathematician with the prize for outstanding teaching in the year 2020 on suggestion of the Technical University of Munich (TUM).

Nada Sissouno teaches higher mathematics for civil and environmental engineering. Her lectures successfully impart the central elements of mathematics within the curriculum of the first year engineering students, whilst also creating enthusiasm for the subject. Despite the size of the lectures, with 600 participants in the TUM Audimax lecture theater, she motivates the students to actively work with her and on the solution of the problems posed. Her online lectures, necessary due to the CoViD pandemic, are supplemented by a wide portfolio of extra exercise units and explanatory videos. A central aspect of her teaching concept is to actively involve the students in the lectures, whilst using the extra offers in her portfolio to enable the students to increase their level of independent and structured self-study.

The award "Preis für gute Lehre an den staatlichen Universitäten in Bayern" includes 5,000 Euros in prize money. The Bavarian Ministry for Science and the Arts annually awards this prize to 15 teachers in higher education. The universities can make suggestions for potential awardees, and  students are also involved in the decision on who will be nominated. The prize underlines the equal importance of teaching at universities, alongside research activities.

As well as Dr. Sissouno, the TUM Professor TiloBiedermann, Chair and Director of the Clinic and Policlinic for Dermatology and Allergology, also receives the Preis für gute Lehre. All awardees are listed in the following press announcement: Pressemeldung des Bayerischen Staatsministerium für Wissenschaft und Kunst.

Nada Sissouno is a researcher in the group Applied and Numerical Analysis and Optimization and Data Analysis. Furthermore, she is deputy Gender Equality Officer of the TUM and women's representative of the faculty, as well as advisor for Talent management and diversity within the Department of Mathematics.
