The workshop "Critical transitions and nonautonomous bifurcations" will take place at the Science & Study Center of the Technical University Munich in Raitenhaslach on the 24th to 26th of August 2022. 

The main focus of the meeting is on the relation between critical transitions in complex systems and nonautonomous bifurcation theory. The topics will range from mathematical theory of critical transitions to applications to nature, technology and society. The aim is to bring together experts and young scientists interested in critical transitions and nonautonomous dynamics, to promote the exchange of current results and new ideas.

The workshop is organized by Prof. Christian Kühn, Dr. Iacopo P. Longo and Miriam Manlik from the Department of Mathematics with the endorsement and support of the Technical University of Munich.

Venue, travel and accommodation

The venue

The TUM Science & Study Center is located in the restored prelate's wing of the former Cistercian monastery Raitenhaslach near Burghausen, on the German side of the border with Austria. The venue allows enjoying the beautiful setting of the historical building (dating back to the 18th century), which was left almost completely untouched by the restoration and refurbishment started in 2013. The workshop will take place in the beautiful ceremonial hall, the Aula maior, under the ceiling frescoes painted by Johann Martin Heigl in the 18th century.


The Hotel Glöcklhofer in Burghausen-Neustadt is the TUM Science & Study Center Raitenhaslach's partner hotel. The hotel offers a special fare for the workshop attendees: 

  • Single room incl. breakfast and shuttle (from the hotel to Raitenhaslach and Raitenhaslach – hotel): 81 € per night.
  • Double room incl. breakfast and shuttle: 87 € per room per night.

Travel to Burghausen

There are a few options to reach Burghausen. The closest airports are 

  • Airport Munich/Erding, Franz-Josef-Strauß-Airport
    + regional trains: Munich Airport - Munich - Mühldorf - Burghausen (2h 15' approx.)
  • Airport Salzburg (Austria), W.-A.-Mozart Airport
    + regional trains: Salzburg Airport - Salzburg - Mühldorf - Burghausen (2h 40' approx.)

If you intend to travel by car, here is a short list of close important cities:

  • A 94 Munich - Altötting – Marktl/exit Burghausen (approx. 100 km)
  • A 92 / A 94 / B 12 Passau - Burghausen (approx. 85 km)
  • B 20 Salzburg/ Freilassing – Burghausen (approx. 50 km)
  • B 20 Straubing - Burghausen (approx. 100 km)

These suggestions are only indicative. We recommend that you carefully plan your journey using your preferred travel assistant. In case you shall need some help, please get in touch with us.

Health measures

We are committed to keep high health standards and avoid the transmission of the COVID19 as much as possible. Therefore, besides enforcing the relative legislation of the Free State of Bavaria (e.g. on the use of masks, rooms capacity etc., which we will notify to the participants by email shortly before the workshop), these additional specific measures will be put in place:

  • The workshop will take place in the ceremonial hall which is 191 square meters in size, and has enough space for up to 180 people. Nevertheless, the attendance is limited to 50 people (less than 28% of the actual capacity). 
  • Two additional seminar rooms (the smallest with a capacity of 12 people) are available for private meetings, study and separate discussions.
  • All the participants will be provided with a free antigen self-test for COVID19 upon arrival in order to limit the occurrence of infection chains due to the workshop.
  • Hand-sanitizer will be available in the premise at all time. The participants will be required to disinfect their hands before and after handling common objects (e.g. remote control to change slides, cutlery at the lunch and coffee-breaks counters).


In order to register for the workshop, please fill in the questionnaire below. The following registration fee applies: €107,85 (to be paid directly at the TUM Science & Study Center; an invoice will be issued on request). The registration fee covers the access to the venue, coffee breaks and lunches (Wed-Thu-Fri).

The deadline for registration is June 30, 2022. However, note that, in order to maintain higher health standards, the workshop's attendance is limited to 50 attendees. The available places will be distributed on a first-come-first-served policy, and the registration will close earlier if the maximum capacity is reached.

The option for a contributed talk is offered in the registration form. In order to apply, it is necessary to provide a title and short abstract for your contributed talk. Confirmation of acceptance will be given once the deadline for registration is reached.
