Proof of German Language Proficiency For international applicants:
This Master's program can be completed in English and knowledge of the German language is not decisive for the admission decision. Nonetheless, as you are studying in Germany, the federal government demands that you have at least a basic level of German language knowledge after your second semester at TUM.
In case you already have knowledge of the German language, you can submit a proof as part of the application. The certificate must indicate the level of the acquired German language skills and must be submitted in original or as a certified copy.
If you don't submit a German language proof for the application, you will be admitted under the condition that you acquire a basic level of German language proficiency within your first two semesters at TUM (e.g. by completing a German language course here).
Proof of English Language Skills You must provide evidence of adequate knowledge of the English language. Students whose native tongue or language of instruction is not English must demonstrate proficiency through an acknowledged language test such as “Test of English as a Foreign Language“ (TOEFL) (at least 88 points on the TOEFL iBT), “International English Language Testing System” (IELTS) (at least 6.5 points), or “Cambridge Main Suite of English Examinations”; alternatively adequate language skills may be proven through a good grade in English (corresponding to at least 10 out of 15 points) awarded by a domestic higher education entrance qualification. Some institutes send your results directly to TUM if you provide the correct address: TU München, Immatrikulationsamt, Arcisstr. 21, D-80333 München (in case of TOEFL add the TOEFL-CODE: university: 7806; department: 99). If you send in your language certificate by yourself we need a certified copy.
Letter of Motivation A written statement describing the reasons for wishing to be admitted to the TUM study program that you have chosen. The Letter of Motivation should be written in English or German and should be 1-2 pages long. It should explain why your specific abilities, interests and career goals make you a good candidate for the intended study program and why you would like to study at the TUM. Furthermore, you should explain why you feel you are in a position to understand the mathematical contents of the intended study program and how you are able to process and independently answer the abstract questions. Additional relevant information pertaining to the present background history or regarding any special qualifications that you possess may be included. In your Letter of Motivation you must affirm that you have, without assistance, personally thought of and written your reasons for choosing this study program and that you have identified any thoughts/ideas stemming from foreign resources.
Essay A written essay, in English or German, approximately 1000 words in length. A declaration that the essay is the candiates's own work, and that the candidate has clearly identified any ideas stemming from outside sources must be submitted.

Applicants for the winter semester 2018/2019 must select one of the following essay themes:

1. Convex vs. non-convex problems: Their relationships, and algorithmic approaches.
2. Can we trust machines? Deep learning is mathematical in nature. Is there a full mathematical understanding of its effectiveness on real-life tasks?
3. The mathematics of speech recognition as data analysis challenge and its applications.
