Studying at the Department of Mathematics

The Mathematics Faculty is divided into 15 chairs, offering a broad variety of research fields and lectures, especially in applied mathematics. The latest QS World University Ranking placed the department first in Germany, and among the best european mathematics faculties.

This site is here to give you information and orientation if you...

  • ...are interested in a full time study at the Mathematics Faculty
  • ...came with one of our exchange programs (Erasmus or TUMExchange)
  • ...are planning to write or writing your thesis at our department
  • or if you are doing an internship here

Study Programmes at the Mathematics Faculty

An overview of the different Degree Programs offered at the faculty can be found unter the following overview.

Mathematical courses

A selection of mathematical courses available can be found in the module catalogue. Please keep in mind that nearly all undergraduate courses are given in German, even if you can find English descriptions in the catalogue. Each course is taught either in winter term or in summer term. As a general rule, you can assume that most courses offered within a Masters program can be taught in English. However, this sometimes depends on the professor.

Furthermore you can look at TUMonline which is one of our information systems at TUM. It offers the possibility of searching for courses by semester and degree. You can select the academic department and then browse through the courses offered in the current term.

Advice on how to find suitable courses and register for exams can be found on the webpage Course Selection and Registration.

Application

Depending whether you are applying as a graduating or as non-degree exchange student (Erasmus, Laotse oder TUMExchange) the application process differs. Admission is generally restricted and a applications should have an adequate command of the German language.

Degree seeking students

Information on the application process for the Bachelor of Mathematics can be found here
Information on the application process for one of the five different Master Programms offered by the Mathematics Faculty can be found here.
