German Degrees

To fulfill the formal requirements for a doctorate at our department you must have completed your degree (Master’s, Diploma or equivalent) with an above average grade, i.e. a grade point average of at least 2.5 or the rating “good”. Above-average performance can be also demonstrated by achievements such as scientific work (e.g. publications) carried out after the completion of your studies.
The Dean’s Office of our department ultimately determines whether your qualification will be recognized.

For further information and exceptional admissions based on other degrees please read the Regulations for the Award of Doctoral Degrees at the Technische Universität München.

Candidates who hold a Bachelor’s degree please note the requirements for admission to TopMath.

Foreign Degrees

Applicants with a degree obtained from a foreign university must undergo a procedure of recognition in order to determine the equivalence of their degree. Equivalence will be determined by the dean of our department in consultation with the TUM Matriculation Office.

A step-by-step description of the recognition procedure can be found here.

Important:Please note that the recognition procedure is a part of the application for the registration on the doctoral candidacy list. Depending on whether you are interested in pursuing a standard doctorate or applying to TopMath or IGDK, there are important previous steps for admission. For detailed information on these steps, please read, depending on your case:
